What is an open MRI?
MRIs are safe, painless, and noninvasive diagnostic machines that provide high-quality, three-dimensional images of your body’s organs, tissues, and structures. The procedure is safe and produces very little radiation. An open MRI is less restrictive and less enclosed than a traditional MRI.
The open quality should make you feel more comfortable during the procedure, especially if you have any form of claustrophobia. How does an open MRI compare to a traditional MRI?
The primary difference between an open and traditional MRI is how much space surrounds you while you are inside the machine. Many people, especially those with claustrophobia, complain of feeling constrained or having difficulty breathing in a traditional MRI.
With an open MRI in a MAGNETOM Espree by Siemens, you’ll be unconfined. Additionally, if you are on the bigger side, this machine can accommodate you. It’s safe to use so long as you weigh no more than 550 pounds (250 kilograms).

Why would I need an open MRI?

Is there any special preparation for an open MRI?
The open MRI requires the same considerations and preparations as any other MRI procedure. While you likely will not need to modify your diet, medications, activity, or sleep, there are a few factors important to consider to ensure your safety. The technicians need to know if you have any metal anywhere in your body, including:
- Brain aneurysm clips
- Vascular stents
- Pacemakers
- Defibrillators
- Artificial joints
- Inner ear implants
- Some heart valves
Additionally, if you have ever worked with sheet metal or been injured by shrapnel, it is important to let the Precise MRI staff know. All of these circumstances pose risks to your safety as well as the quality of the machine’s imaging. While the staff will check, make sure to leave any metallic items like your pen, change, or jewelry as well as any digital items like your mobile phone outside the room before your exam.
If you are pregnant, notify the MRI technician staff. If you experience claustrophobia, even within the open MRI, let your radiologist know. They may provide mild sedatives.
