MRA

What is an MRA?

A magnetic resonance angiogram is a type of MRI used specifically to evaluate arteries, veins, and the flow of blood with them. Radio-frequency waves within a strong magnetic field generate high-quality visualizations of parts of your circulatory system during a noninvasive procedure.

MRA is frequently used to image blood vessels in your:

  • Brain
  • Neck
  • Heart
  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Liver
  • Kidneys

Your physician uses images of these locations to evaluate the integrity of your blood vessels and their ability to circulate your blood.

You may need an MRA if there is any narrowing, like plaque build-up, in your arteries. A  magnetic resonance angiogram can detect, diagnose, and monitor conditions like strokes, heart disorders, and diseases of blood vessels.

Your physician may recommend an MRA in order to diagnose:

  • Blood clots
  • Plaque build-up
  • Aneurysms
  • Weakened blood vessels
  • Vessel structural abnormalities

Additionally, magnetic resonance angiograms can help assess blood vessels involved in surgery, identify vessels injured after an accident, and assist cancer therapy protocols.

How does MRA work?

The MRA procedure is noninvasive and does not cause any pain. In some cases, the team uses an MRI dye called gadolinium to enhance clarity and detail in the images.

You lie on a padded bed that fits within the MRI machine that contains the magnets and imaging components. Once your board-certified technician places the part of your body being imaged centrally within the machine, you should try to stay as still as possible.

Any movements can distort the image. Consequently, it is important you communicate with the technician to make yourself as comfortable as possible before the procedure begins. The procedure can last 20-60 minutes or more depending on the area being imaged. During this time, you will be in constant communication with the technician via microphone.

The only discomfort may arise from the MRI machine itself. It makes loud thumping noises, though you wear extensive hearing protection. In most cases, you will use the open MRI, but if not and if you experience claustrophobia, you may require additional steps, like a mild sedative, to make you feel comfortable.

If at any time, you feel the need to exit the MRI, you will be able to. However, in such a case, you will have to restart the entire procedure again.
